Special effects device “DIVE MONSTER”
DIVE MONSTER is a special device that quickly diffuses scent into large spaces such as halls and theaters where live events are held.
– Updating Entertainment with Scent
Scenting, previously considered difficult to control, can now be used to produce stage effects that add color to the stage. For example, when a café scene appears in a play, a “coffee aroma” is instantly wafted into the auditorium, making the audience feel as if they are in the same café as the performers. This is an expression that appeals not only to the conventional “sense of sight and sound” but also to the “sense of smell”. The “Dive Monster” aroma device developed can deliver sents at a speed of approximately 20 seconds per 3,000 cubic meters when used with a circulator, and can be used in a variety of settings, from large spaces such as domes and open-air spaces to indoor art exhibitions. The company also produces the scent by themselves so that it possible to create a sent that do not exist, such as one that fits the theme of music.
– From Aromatherapist to Fragrance Director
The reason why CEO Ms. Kanae Kohri, the former aromatherapist, turned into a fragrance director was because of a jazz dance recital that she had attended as a hobby. When she was asked if she would be interested in directing a fragrance for the event, she agreed, but she had no experience in stage direction, no equipment to deliver the fragrance, or did not know how to do it. Fortunately, she was introduced to a special effects company and successfully directed fragrance effects on stage. From there, her path as a “scent stage director” began. Since then, she has been active in a variety of venues, including events at Kyocera Dome and directing the “Film, Horic xxxHOLiC” immersive exhibition directed by Mika Ninagawa, one of famous Japanese photographers. She says, “As an aromatherapist, it is a precious job to provide healing to each individual, but delivering scents to the thousands of people in the audience and providing them experience that they will remember is something special for me.”

Because of the nature of fragrance, which is deeply connected to personal memories, there is no scent that can be accepted by everyone. In Japan, people tend to prefer odorless or natural scents, and there is even a term for the pollution caused by scents: “scent pollution. Therefore, SceneryScent is careful not to force fragrance when staging a production. Scenting is designed so that the fragrance is only used in one scene on stage and disappears immediately. SceneryScent is always working on productions thingking for people who don’t accept fragrance. “Dive Monster”, scent device, is designed to not only emit fragrance, but also to extinguish it quickly.
– The Inevitability of SceneryScent’s Global Expansion
Japanese culture is so odorless that it can be called “odorless culture.” However, Europe and other countries where perfumes have been developed have a different perception of “fragrance” from Japan. As the sent effect by ScenerySent was well received when their stage was performed overseas, and they recognized that demand could be expected overseas as well. Although the timing of their overseas expansion was delayed due to the Covid-19, they had been considering overseas activities for some time. They could not find any reason to stay in Japan and aim to participate in overseas exhibitions, such as shows in Las Vegas and live events for artists, in order to be active in overseas markets.
